Welcome to District-9-club, the place where all the fanatical District 9 lovers congregate. We feature the art of our members in the gallery, so have a look and head on over to the originals and spread some love why don’t ya!

To join, well, I’d prefer a note sent to the club, please. That way I can keep everything neat and organized and prevent my sanity from getting any thinner.

You don’t have to draw/write anything D-9 related to join. Just having a good healthy obsession is enough.

Kuns voorlegging?
To submit art to the club you must be a member first of all. If you are one then please send me a link to the artwork you want submitted in a note titled “Submission” or something similar. I will upload everything myself, for I am a jealous and covetous admin.
It would be endlessly helpful if I could ‘download’ your picture, but I can make do without, it’s just more work. |D You could even send me something offsite, honestly. WHATEVER YOU WANT, as long as it’s D-9.
If you send me a note and your art doesn’t make in up in the next flood just prod me with a stick. I may have missed it!

While it’s not required, it is recommended you watch the club. You know, to stay up to date on all the D-9 art, of course! Well, and if you want to know about when we’ll be holding contests and fancy stuff like that!

Feel free to spam the front page with your love, but let’s keep things sane (or semi-sane) and don’t spam TOO MUCH.

Include some sort of allusion to Wikus and his hilariousness in your note so I know you read this journal.

If you’ve got a favorite District 9 picture/fanfic and it’s not already faved, tell me! I’ll be glad to take a look and fave ^{if applicable}. c: I’m officially too lazy to do it myself.

Look, our first contest! If you plan on entering PLEASE READ EVERYTHING CAREFULLY, not following the guidelines will get your entry ignored and I’d really rather not do that. D:
(There may be some content here that some of you may disagree with, just remember they’re my own opinions and are always open for debate. DEBATE being the calm and polite discussion of differing beliefs, not the blatant bashing of them. Ja gut? If you can make a good argument you may sway me to overlook some of these rules to suit your ideas! I’m easy like that.)

First I’d like to thank all of you that voted in the poll, it was very helpful in my decision! I was originally going to do something like “Design Your Own Prostitute” but not only would this be EXTREMELY hard to judge it would be just… downright distasteful! So I’ve come up with a much better idea, one that I think we can all agree will get those creative juices flowing and show just how imaginative our members are.

Here are your guidelines! FOLLOW THEM:

Our first contest is to depict a hypothetical situation between humans and Poleepkwa. It can be romantic, painful, or even mundane, everyday interactions! It can take place in the past, present, or future of the Poleepkwa’s stay on Earth, meaning you can depict first contact, building tension over the years, or perhaps even how the Poleepkwa will be treated in the future after the events of District 9. This is a pretty open contest, whatever comes to mind, draw it!

Let’s steer clear of existing characters, however. We all love Christopher, Wikus and Oliver, but I don’t think we should limit ourselves; there are plenty of other people out there dealing with the aliens everyday and plenty of other aliens in need of your attention!

You’ll have to write a short story about what you draw (if you’re writing a fanfic, obviously this doesn’t apply to you quite as much). This doesn’t have to be long, just a little something-something to help me completely understand what you’re trying to convey! This will also help me to see if you succeeded in properly conveying your idea in general. If you are writing a story, why not wrap up all your thoughts and feelings on the writing and maybe give a bit of back-story to the scene depicted? Yeah, that should help me a lot. I’m 20, I can handle cussing if it works well with the story, but let’s be grown-up here and not over do it, alright dearies? (I know, I know, it’s totally hypocritical because of Wikus and all… BUT STILL. xD)

Let’s also keep in mind that while ChocoPrawn does enjoy a good viewing of suggestive material once in a while as much as any other fully mature adult she DOES NOT LIKE PORN. If you do choose to depict a romantic event and decide that you want to show something sexual, you MUST MAKE IT TASTEFUL. This mean I don’t want to see and hard core crotch-shots, in fact, I don’t want to see crotch at all. Nudity is something completely different, just being nude is fine, it’s when you start getting genital detail that you’re getting into the `porn´ category. You have to find a creative and classy way to show that situation without being blatantly obvious that “something’s going down.” If you’re writing a story please leave out the gritty details. I have a good imagination! Really! I can take vague hints and form them into my own ideas of what may or may not be going on. I find this approach FAR more entertaining and engaging than “ZOMG PENIS IN VAGINA.” Okay? Thank you.

Um, okay, this is pretty important. I would very much like you to stay within the limits of reality (as laid down in the D-9 universe). So, I’m sorry, no female prawns. These are not canon and do not exist so I can’t be objective about judging anything with them. You CAN however depict a feminized prawn, as there are Non-humans that have been given female names even though they were not shown in the movie. (Go read Christopher’s blog, specifically this one entry, in the comments you will see characters writing in the Non-human language with female names. I use this as proof they exist, but there are NOT Poleepkwa on Earth out there with only one set of sexual organs/breasts/appearing dominantly and humanisticly female, they are all hermaphrodites and look basically the same. Sorry. 8|)
You can ALSO depict hypothetical ‘higher breeds,’ since we don’t know a darned thing about them but it was hinted about that they exist. I do ask that you keep them looking pretty well the same as the Poleepkwa we got to see in the movie though, since different social classes in a species generally don’t differ too horribly from one another. Follow the Rules of the Universe, basically, and you can’t go wrong.

Don’t be afraid to touch on sensitive subjects. I can take it! I’M TUFF STUFF and I really like to be made to think! But do so keeping in mind that it should be executed tastefully (haha again with taste). I know this can limit you quite a bit, but I’m also trying to challenge you creatively, you know! Experiment with new ways to talk about those subjects, creative and nonliteral imagery is your friend! C:

I don’t care how many times you enter. You can draw 100 pictures or write a dozen little stories and enter them all, but this doesn’t increase your chances of winning. I’d much prefer you draw or write one intense, thought provoking item than a bunch of little “eh, these are alright” things. Keep in mind all your entries must follow the guidelines, however.

That’s about all I can think of guideline/outrageously-unfair-rule wise, so let’s move on to how you’ll be graded.

You’ll be judged on:
Your ability to depict the topic you’ve got in mind. This is why it’s so important to write a little story bit and be very descriptive about what you’re thinking! If I can’t clearly understand what you’re getting at or what point you’re trying to get across that will knock a few points of your general score. This doesn’t include your personal style, anatomical abilities, coloring skills, etc. I don’t really care too much if it’s EPIC or simple, those are all pretty much moot points as far as I’m concerned. You can draw like a 5 yr-old and still manage to make something visually exciting and implement your ideas in an awesome way.
Your ability to follow the guidelines. Obviously, I’m a nice gal, heck I even state if you make a good enough point of an idea you have I may let a small discrepancy slide. If you’re at all unclear of an idea you have and are concerned it may not follow the guidelines, or would like to argue for a guideline to be overlooked in favor of your idea, then by all means note me on ~gutter-child. I’ll get back a reply back to you lickety spilt!
The originality and vision of the imagery you use. Being an art student I’m fairly good at looking at something and finding those little hidden keys to the main idea of a picture or story. (Well, usually...) I’m not saying you should go completely abstract here, but using metaphors and going about an idea in a way most people wouldn’t think of are very good ways to get your picture some points with me. But if your picture is REALLY OUT THERE, then I suggest you make a more detailed description. Let’s just go with: the less literal your image the more detailed your short story should be. Sound good?
The effort you put into a piece. I did say that personal sytle doesn’t really matter to me, and it doesn’t, but no matter what style you have it’s always evident when you put a great amount of effort into something or not. For artists this could mean just taking a few extra minutes to explore new ways of shading an object or some unusual lighting situations. For writers this could mean taking the time to carefully proofread your work and use some varied wordage! (Those of you hardcore writers don’t need me to tell you that, though.) If you watch my main you know I love to see experimentation and that’s no exception here.

Hm, those seem like a good start. If I think of any more I will be sure to add them and send this journal back into your inboxes saying I’ve added more!

PLEASE SEND ALL YOUR ENTRIES TO DISTRICT-9-CLUB IN A NOTE TITLED “CONTEST” OTHERWISE CHOCOPRAWN’S HEAD MIGHT JUST EXPLODE AND THAT WOULD SUCK. I will also only be taking entries from members of the club. You can join the club and THEN enter the contest, but I won’t accept an entry if you’re not a member. Again, this is to prevent head explosion. Entries will not be uploaded to the club gallery until after the contest (if you want it uploaded that is), but if you have other non-contest artwork you want submitted, by all means do so!

As far as deadlines go, PF I don’t know at all. I don’t want to hinder anyone’s creative process with a deadline right now, so at the moment there isn’t one. I do have another idea for a holiday themed D-9 contest, but since we’re an all encompassing love lump of people that won’t be limited to a specific holiday so, ah well. We’ll see. If I get a large amount of entries right away I may be tempted to make the deadline before December. If not, we’ll just bump that other contest to later. Can’t hurt right? xD

Hi I’m an edit: Well, damn I’m a moron, here I totally forgot the prizes. lol Since I have even LESS money than those poor underpaid Poleepkwa I’ll be drawing out the prizes, anything you want, doesn’t have to be District 9 or anything!

1st prize: Full color, background, completely decked out picture in whatever medium you want. Let’s keep it to a max of two characters, if that. Make it too complicated and I may be tempted to grumble angrily while doing it and take forever to spite you.

2nd prize: Full color, character only, no background, whatever medium you want. I GUESS I could draw two characters in this instance too, IF I MUST. But remember I’m a lazy and in college…

3rd prize: Any medium I want, may or may not be in color (probably will be though), only on character, no background.

Everyone else: Honorable mention in the journal.

Keep in mind my limitations, when I say ‘any medium you want’ I’m really saying ‘of the examples in my gallery, any medium you want’ so nothing outrageous and weird like ‘the blood of an albino orangutan’ or something. o_o And um, if you’re not satisfied with these prizes, I really don’t know what to say! I can’t give you anything else. xDD
